The Care Show 14 Feb 2010

DESIGNING FOR DEMENTIA

A two-day Dementia Care programme will run in conjunction with the Care Show Bournemouth, BIC, 30 – 31 March, 2010 to address important issues and challenges surrounding the quality of life for dementia sufferers in care homes. For the first time, seminars will include a focussed look at environment, architecture and interior design for these residents.

Speakers will include experts from a variety of design fields: Eda Brooks, Managing Director of Access 21 Interiors, Judi Watkinson, Interior Design and Inclusive Design Consultant of Judi Watkinson Design and Access and Martin Habell, Director of Architecture and Project Management. Each will discuss their professional role in helping dementia sufferers and the best ways to bring a genuine quality and workability to their residences.

The Dementia Care programme, held in a dedicated Dementia Care Theatre, has been a significant development of the Care Shows and has gone from strength to strength since its inception two years ago. More than half of long-term care residents have dementia (source: alz.org) and meeting their capabilities and physical and emotional needs is a considerable responsibility.

“The Dementia Care Theatre provides the ideal venue where specialist carers, health professionals and care home operators can listen to experts and develop ideas,” comments Jonny Sullens, Event Director. “Sympathetic designs to ease practical living combined with an enhanced environment can add so much value to an elderly resident’s life, particularly dementia sufferers, and we are delighted to be including this important element in the programme.”

In addition, further aspects of dementia care will be addressed by top industry speakers. Martin Green, Chief Executive of the English Community Care Association (ECCA) will present ‘Personalisation in Dementia Care’ and Colin Paton joins Annie Stevenson of the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) to discuss ways to achieve high quality care in: ‘Supporting the Dementia Care Workforce’.

The Dementia Care Theatre will introduce Sarah Reed, a trustee with the charity Contact the Elderly, who has recently had remarkable success in increasing communication between elderly people and their carers and families with through her new company Many Happy Returns.

Further seminars include essential information on legal issues from Charlie Siegle of Stephens Scown Solicitors and care staff looking for useful techniques to deal with challenging incidents will hear advice from Brian Daly, Trainer, Closing the Gap, in ‘Understanding Behaviour’.
