The report The State of Adult Social Care Services 2018 considers what the CQC has found about the quality of care across the full range of adult social care services that it regulates. Since 2014, the CQC has inspected adult social care services and rates them according to five key questions whether they're safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. The 2018 report will consider the latest in ratings in adult social care services in England; the regional variations in the quality of care; and, the differences in performance between the type and size of service. This session will consider the trends in inspection and by the CQC, and how to work with regulator more effectively.

The ageing population in the UK is prompting a massive increase in demand for dementia services. The financial costs of dementia in the UK are estimated to be £27 billion and with the number of people with the disease predicted to top 1 million by 2025 these figures will spiral. Back in 2012, the Dementia Challenge was launched with the aim of making England the best country in the world for dementia care and support by 2020. But, in 2018, the NHS and adult social services are struggling to meet existing demand let alone transform the quality of care nationally. Our expert panel will discuss the challenges facing providers going forward, and outline how quality can be provided in care even when resources are under pressure.

The residential care market is facing significant challenges. Local authority cuts have led to the underfunding of adult social care, with research suggesting that the market contracted by 1400 care homes between 2012 and 2017. The average fee paid by the local authority for a care home resident is falling short of the real costs of care by more than £100 a week. Self-funding residents are having to fill the gap, which is estimated to be £1 billion in 2017/18. Furthermore, business costs are rising for care homes with the National Living Wage hitting £7.83 per hour in April 2018. However, innovative providers are making the most of the self-funding market and successful new models of care have emerged. Our panel will discuss what approaches are working 1)  both in terms of quality of care and profitability 2) and offer advice to the audience on the hallmarks of high performance.

A year ago if you’d said that an app could replace medication, you’d have been laughed at. In fact we were. But that’s changing, as even the NHS is recognising the potential that apps can make to a care strategy, rendering it more person centred than conventional treatment. Apps, such as RemindMeCare, impact on activity, music, cognitive stimulation and physical therapies using gamification and social engagement, whilst monitoring outcomes, to improve wellbeing.

Vanguard Funding helped us try out a method of properly upskilling care practitioners who wanted to do so much more! The NHSE Vanguard Programme was an enabler for Herts Care Partners to look at something: we had believed would make a difference; scale it up; and prove it worked. We worked with 20 homes and put them through a stretching education programme, we then supported them with implementation and rewarded them for their efforts. This presentation will take you through our journey and help you to see how you can take our learning and implement it in your own area

Technology now touches every aspect of care, and many care businesses are looking to technology to strengthen their performance. But, during this period of workforce challenge, are they doing it for the right reasons? Care is about human contact and empathy, though some seem to see new technologies as a way of cutting costs and replacing staff. Others are implementing digital solutions to simply raise the quality of their services. Hear from leading providers who have embraced the potential for technology in their everyday service provision and their organisational practice. They will consider the reasoning behind new technologies, and discuss the pros and cons of different approaches.

The Friends of the Elderly Group supports older people to live life independently and lead fulfilling lives. FotE has 13 care homes providing residential, nursing and specialist dementia care and for those who need more support with life limiting conditions. And, its community services also support people to remain living independently in their own homes. The presentation will focus on the journey of improvement for FotE triggered by a safeguarding incident in which the Group dramatically turned around its CQC rating. FotE went from a rating of 'Inadequate’ to 'Good’ within in six months. The session will consider how FotE worked with SCIE, its board and managers, and service users to improve their care services.

Transparency in care for both residents and care staff. Almost 400,000 elderly are living in care homes throughout the UK - that fact and the projected increasing demand for beds as the incidence of dementia increases over the next 30 years warrants serious discussion and consideration for safety monitoring in public areas in care homes to be made mandatory.
