Accessible furniture without any stigma

Emphasising stability, ergonomics, functionality and design. TON introduces Santiago 02 – a new collection designed for people with limited mobility by the Czech designer René Šulc.

The Santiago 02 collection was influenced by an extensive consultation with clients and staff of rehabilitation and senior care facilities. “In our consultation sessions respondents placed great emphasis on comfort and security. They wanted sturdy furniture that would not roll away when they grabbed it or leaned on it. And comfort was also key because many clients suffer from bedsores and calluses,” outlined the designer René Šulc the collection’s key features. The collection includes nine products – electric recliner, relaxation chair with and without a headrest, double and triple relaxation settees, footrest, folding screen, dining chair and dining table.

The basis of the collection is solid, beech wood construction, which is further strengthened on chairs and armchairs with the help of elongated armrests and handrails. “These provide great support during seating and rising. On the relaxation chairs the armrests are extended around the rear of the backrest to provide a handrail, making it easier to move around the furniture. The table has a special groove on the underside to help diners seat themselves or push and pull their chair,” explained Šulc. The chairs, armchairs and accessories use a range of ergonomic elements that ensure both comfort and stability. “For example, the gently undulating, leaf-like shape of the relaxation chair simulates the feeling of a warm embrace. Coupled with a careful selection of PUR foams of varying firmness for the headrest and the backrest, the shape of the chair secures a person in the proper seating position and creates a sense of comfort and stability,” elaborated the designer.

The collection’s distinctive form comes from another finding from the consultation. “Users placed great emphasis on the importance of a home-like atmosphere, and that’s why I wanted to remove – at least visually – any stigma attached to hospital facilities and helplessness,” stressed the designer. In his design Šulc aimed to come as close as possible to a classic chair or settee while incorporating all the key ergonomic and functional elements required for people with limited mobility. The materials used in the collection also help to create a cosy home-like feeling. “As a natural material, wood is perceived by users as pleasant, timeless and homey,” added Šulc.

During consultation, care facility personnel placed further emphasis on practicality, easy maintenance and easy manoeuvrability. “For example, the option to have a different colour for the seat than the backrest helps to hide unsightly stains. Also, the electric recliner can be charged overnight and then moved to wherever needed with the help of swivel wheels,” explained the designer. Removable tray table, pillows of varying sizes, retractable armrests and adjustable foot and headrests are additional elements that make the recliner practical for both professional health care settings as well as home care.

The name of the collection was inspired by the main character in the novel The Old Man and the Sea by the American writer Ernest Hemingway. Just like all other products made by TON, the collection is thoroughly tested by a range of mechanical and static stress tests. “As a designer I often reflect on the meaning of my work. With this collection I feel a great sense of satisfaction,” added Šulc in conclusion.

Electric Recliner

A high level of comfort, quality workmanship and pleasing design – this stylish electric

recliner will be appreciated in both professional and home settings. The footrest and headrest tilt independently, even with the recliner in use, and the fully retractable wooden armrests make it possible to transfer a person with ease. The height-adjustable headrest and ergonomically shaped upholstery ensure hours of seated comfort, and the sturdy rear handrail and lockable swivel wheels facilitate safe movement. The recliner includes a removable tray table and practical side pockets.

Dining Chair

Sit comfortably at the table and rise with ease. The seat is made with two variants of firmness: the firmer version with elongated armrests facilitates easy seating and rising from the dining table, while the softer version is suitable for relaxing in a living room setting. The chair is light and stacks easily.

Dining Table

A square or rectangular dining table with a clean design and well-considered details. The absence of a table apron makes it easy to pair the table with chairs with armrests or with standard wheelchairs. The bottom of the tabletop has a groove on each side to assist diners in pushing themselves back and/or rising from the table. The decorative print on the tabletop creates a homelike feel and avoids the need for a tablecloth, which can complicate rising as well as movement around a table.

Relaxation Armchair

The PUR foam backrest is shaped like a bent leaf and simulates the feeling of a warm embrace. A seated person can be supported by pillows of different sizes that will not fall through the sides thanks to the shape of the wooden frame. The addition of a footrest makes this relaxation chair even more comfortable.

Relaxation Armchair with Headrest

The seat of the relaxation armchair is made from a combination of PUR foams with different

levels of firmness, which ensures great seating comfort and stability. The height adjustable

headrest is elongated at the bottom to provide support for people of short stature. The

ergonomically shaped armrests guarantee support and stability during rising.

Relaxation Double

The Relaxation Double is a partner to the Relaxation Armchair. Made with a focus on comfort and stability, the double includes a handrail along the length of its rear to support easy movement. The option to vary the colour of the seat and the backrest makes

for a refreshing visual feature.

Relaxation Triple

The Relaxation Triple can be used as a sofa. Together with the Relaxation Armchair and

the Relaxation Double, the triple version creates a complete set for a living room, a waiting room or any other group seating arrangement. Upholstery material and colour can be matched or contrasted to create the perfect atmosphere.

Footrest

With its simple and intuitive positioning, the Santiago footrest enhances seating comfort. The

footrest fits neatly under all relaxation chairs, so it can always be at hand without causing an

obstruction.

Folding Screen

The folding screen helps create a sense of privacy in shared rooms. Thanks to its light frame, wheels and handrail, the stable folding screen is easy to move. When folded, the screen takes up very little space.
