The Eden Alternative was founded in 1991 in the USA by Dr Bill Thomas and Jude Meyer-Thomas. It is based on the core belief that ageing should be a continued stage of development and growth, rather than a period of decline.
Eden Alternative training is a philosophy of care that is strikingly simple. Managers, Eden Trainers, Eden Champions and Eden Associates teach that people should live in positive environments, not sterile medical institutions. The philosophy is based on ten principles that have been developed to support the elimination of Loneliness, Helplessness and Boredom. The Eden Alternative is about changing the culture of care, removing the departmentalised, task orientation of an ‘institutional’ model.
