Policy and practice: building the future of adult social care together

08 Oct 2026
Keynote Theatre
Future of care
Adult social care is at a pivotal moment. Major programmes of social care, NHS and housing reform create a rare opportunity to move beyond managing pressures and towards designing a more coherent, sustainable future. In this keynote, the Social Care Institute for Excellence’s (SCIE) Chair Baroness Thornton and SCIE's Head of Social Care Transformation and Improvement will explore how policy and practice must work together to turn ambition into reality.

The keynote will begin by setting out the current policy and reform landscape, examining how developments across social care, health and housing could shape the future of care and support. It will then explore the opportunities and challenges these changes present for the sector, drawing on leading social care charity SCIE's work across practice development and improvement, through consultancy, training and research, to share insights from the frontline. As organisations adapt to new expectations and ways of working, leaders will need to support their teams to make changes in day-to-day practice and remain focused on what matters most to people who draw on care and support. The keynote will consider how the sector can become more consistent, more equitable and more confident in its own potential, helping to deliver better outcomes for people and more effective and efficient services.
