The behaviour crisis no one talks about in care
07 Oct 2026
People & Workforce Theatre
Workforce sustainability
The talk will:
- Explore what workplace incivility looks like in care (often subtle, normalised behaviours rather than overt conflict)
- Link incivility to staff wellbeing, morale, sickness absence, and turnover
- Address the growing generational divide in the workforce, particularly the impact of experienced staff retiring and younger staff entering care with different expectations, communication styles, and values
- Examine how poor culture accelerates this divide, and how inclusive, respectful cultures help retain both groups
The session will provide:
- Clear, real-world examples from the care sector that providers will recognise
- A simple framework to help leaders identify incivility early, before it escalates into formal complaints, grievances, or resignations
- Low-cost, no-cost tools and behaviours that managers can implement immediately to improve everyday culture
- Guidance on how culture and wellbeing initiatives can support providers to work towards CQC “Outstanding”, particularly in relation to Well-led and Caring
- Staff engagement, support, and development
Attendees will leave with:
- A clearer understanding of how everyday behaviours shape culture
- Practical actions to reduce conflict, disengagement, and turnover
- Ideas they can implement without additional budget, focusing instead on leadership approach, communication, and psychological safety
- Increased confidence in linking workforce culture to inspection outcomes
