NHS trials new AI apps to improve dementia diagnosis and care

North London is taking a major step forward in dementia innovation with the launch of trials evaluating two AI-enabled technologies designed to improve dementia diagnosis and care. Led through a collaboration between Punto Health, NHS memory services and UCLPartners, the studies will assess how digital tools can support earlier detection of cognitive decline and provide more personalised support for people living with dementia and their carers.

Supported through two NIHR i4i FAST Awards, the projects will evaluate PuntoTest, a digital assessment tool designed to support earlier and more appropriate referrals into memory services, and PuntoCare, a personalised support platform that provides ongoing guidance and wellbeing support following diagnosis. The studies aim to address some of the most significant challenges facing dementia services, including increasing demand, delayed diagnosis and fragmented post-diagnostic care.

The research is being delivered in partnership with Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust, North London NHS Foundation Trust, UCLPartners and Health Innovation Network South London. Researchers and clinicians will evaluate usability, implementation and early health-economic impact to better understand how these technologies could be adopted within NHS dementia pathways.

If successful, the innovations could help improve access to cognitive assessment, provide more continuous support following diagnosis and reduce pressure on memory services. The project highlights the potential for collaboration between innovators, researchers and health services to develop scalable solutions that improve outcomes and quality of life for people affected by dementia.
