The Jolly Sailor was created with exactly that philosophy in mind.

Designed and built for Kingfisher Manor in Pagham, West Sussex, the installation transforms the sensory space into an immersive coastal retreat inspired by the interior of a traditional luxury boat.

Warm timber-effect panelling surrounds the space, creating the feeling of stepping inside a boat cabin. Deep-blue booth-style seating provides a comfortable place for residents to sit together, while the traditional wooden ship’s helm introduces an instantly recognisable interactive feature.

One of the focal points of the experience is the simulated maritime window, creating the impression of looking out from the boat onto the water and helping complete the feeling of being somewhere beyond the walls of the care home.

Around the room, carefully selected coastal and sensory details add further layers of interest and encourage residents to look, touch, explore and interact.

The idea behind The Jolly Sailor follows the same principles that inspired Little Islands’ Jolly Journey®.

With the Jolly Journey®, residents step inside a nostalgic railway carriage and are transported back to the golden age of steam travel. With The Jolly Sailor, that journey moves from the railway to the coast — creating opportunities to reconnect with memories associated with boats, beaches, seaside holidays and days spent near the water.

These familiar themes can provide natural starting points for conversation.

A ship’s wheel might remind someone of a ferry crossing. The view across the water could prompt memories of a favourite seaside resort. Maritime surroundings may bring back stories of holidays, fishing trips or simply childhood days spent at the beach.

It is these moments of recognition and conversation that make immersive environments particularly valuable within dementia care.

Rather than asking somebody directly to remember something, the environment provides visual, tactile and sensory prompts that can encourage memories and conversations to emerge naturally.

The Jolly Sailor can also simply be enjoyed as somewhere different to spend time.

Residents can sit together for a drink, talk with friends and family, enjoy an activity or relax within surroundings that offer a sense of escape from the everyday care environment.

For Little Islands, this is an important part of designing for care.

A care home is first and foremost somebody’s home, and the spaces within it should provide opportunities for enjoyment, curiosity, social interaction and meaningful experiences.

The Jolly Sailor demonstrates how imaginative interior design can transform an ordinary room into an experience.

By combining reminiscence, sensory stimulation, interaction and carefully considered interior design, Little Islands has created a destination within Kingfisher Manor that residents can return to again and again.

The Kingfisher Manor project was developed and designed by Simply UK, with Morar Living as the client, and The Jolly Sailor forms part of the distinctive environment created within the home.

For Little Islands, the project represents another example of how bespoke themed design can help turn care environments into places that stimulate conversation, encourage engagement and create memorable moments.
